Lesson 2 Mango Language

1. The language I choose was Dari. 9 MILLION people speak this language (and I hadn't even heard of it!). It is spoken in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This was all the information available before launching. It is one of two official languages of Afghanistan and serves as a common language for all the ethnic groups. Men greet men with handshakes and women greet each other with 3 kisses, but members of the opposite sex do not greet each other.

2. I think this program would be wonderful to learn a new language. It not only teaches you the language but the cultural ways of  it too. I like that it shows you what they will be saying in English and then as they say them it shows what it was look like in Dari. And it repeated the same words so on slide 3 we saw a conversation using simple greetings with the English to Dari translation and then they spoke it in Dari. The next slide was just one word from the first phrase. Again shown in English, Dari and spoken. I like that the button appeared so you could hear it over and over if you like. Then the next slide went on to the next words heard in the greeting.  I don't like how small the new language font appears. If I was copying it or tracing it from the screen I don't think that I would get the words accurately wrote out.
I think that this would be wonderful to use if I get a foreign exchange student in my SuperStudy for a year so they can feel more at home and for me to help connect with them.

  1. Thanks for teaching me about Dari, Elizabeth. I had never heard of it either! You also taught me some cultural do's & don'ts that might come in handy some day! Thanks for your comments on this window to the world.
